Harvesting triticale

Triticale harvest from a 4×4 square foot bed. Harvesting – In small space gardens, you can do this by hand. Gather a bouquet of stalks together and cut them off with pruning shears, leaving at least a foot on stalk attached. The photo above shows our harvest.

When should you cut triticale for hay?

Harvest timing To achieve high-quality triticale forage, it needs to be cut in the flag leaf to boot stage (prior to heading). Yields can be quite variable depending on all of the production practices discussed previously but are often cited in the range of 2 to 4 tons of dry matter per acre.

Does triticale make good dry hay?

Triticale has proven to have higher protein content than both of its parents rye and wheat and can be fed out in the field as a green forage crop, chopped and used as silage or baled and fed as dry hay.

Is triticale good for cattle?

Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye. It is excellent forage for dairy cows at the boot-stage and for beef cows and dairy heifers at the soft dough stage. High protein, digestiblity, and significantly higher yields than other boot-stage cereal grains.

Can you harvest triticale for seed?

It is often grown as fodder for grazing cows or other livestock, but its grain can be harvested and used for animal feed, seed, or human consumption.

Can humans eat triticale?

Triticale is consumed by humans primarily in the form of bread, flour, and cereals, though most of the triticale crop is used for livestock feed.

How long can you graze triticale?

Triticale will be ready for spring grazing 2 to 3 weeks later than rye in spring but will continue to provide good forage several weeks later into late spring than rye. If grazed lightly or not at all in spring, both rye and triticale can produce very high, single cutting hay yields.

Will triticale reseed itself?

Triticale does not tend to reseed itself and become a “weed.”

What is the average yield of triticale?

Triticale silage yield The dry silage yield of triticale averaged 14,324 kg/ha (minimum 12,812 kg/ha; maximum 16,137 kg/ha. This converts to 12,758 lbs/ac (min. 11,411 lbs/ac to max. 14,373 lbs/ac).

How many tons of triticale per acre?

Triticale fits well in the common rotation of maize for silage during the warm season and an annual forage such as triticale for green chop and/or silage during the cool season. Yields of up to 18 ton of triticale forage per acre (about 3–4 tons of dry forage) are common.

Does triticale grow back?

In some areas when conditions are favorable, farmers will plant the triticale in the late summer, early fall, cut it for hay that fall, allow growing back in the spring and removing up to two more cuttings under the proper management.

Is triticale good for deer?

Cereal grains for the deer manager mean wheat, oats, rye and triticale. Both types of plants (cereals and brassicas) provide strong nutritional value and a taste that deer relish.

What is the best grain to finish cattle?

Corn has the highest energy value and is likely the most economical grain in corn-producing localities. Corn, oats, and barley are the primary grains fed to cattle. Oats, which has a lower energy value due to its high fiber content, is considered the "safest" grain in regards to potential digestive disturbances.

What is the best grain to fatten cattle?

What is the best feed for fattening cattle? Barley is the best grain for lot feeding cattle, but wheat, triticale, sorghum, maize, and oats can be used. Oats is not an ideal grain on its own for cattle fattening but can be used with any of the other grains. Hay or silage could be used as the roughage source.

How many pounds of triticale per acre?

Triticale should be seeded using a standard grain drill about ½ to 1½ inch deep. Plant about 100 – 120 pounds per acre. Use lower rate for grain production and higher rate for forage. Triticale does not tiller as much as wheat.

How late can you seed triticale?

Seeding date Because spring triticale is a late maturing crop, seeding for grain production should be completed by the second week of May in all parts of the western prairies and British Columbia. If conditions allow, seed as early as May 15 for maximum yield.

Does triticale fix nitrogen?

Triticale, there- fore, may be a useful crop for trapping excess nitrogen that would normally be lost through leaching, while peas can be used to actually increase the total amount of nitro- gen in a soil.

How long does it take triticale to mature?

Triticale can produce good dry matter yields within 60 to 80 days after planting. When planted the first two weeks of August and with adequate rainfall, spring triticale can produce from 2,500 to 5,000 pounds per acre of dry matter by mid-October.

What does triticale do for the soil?

Triticale is among the best overwintering species that help reduce soil erosion and capture residual nitrogen, which in turn increases annual forage yield and quality (Ketterings et al., 2015).

What do you do with triticale?

Triticale berries must be boiled in water or broth until soft enough to eat. Add the cooked berries to salads or use them in the same way you would rice. Triticale berries pair well with pine nuts, cranberries, greens, cheese, onions and garlic.
